The Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), the umbrella
body of professional bodies that are chartered and recognised by the act
of parliament to regulate their profession, has called on President
Muhammadu Buhari to embark on a drastic diversification of the Nigerian
economy.
The association highlighted areas that the federal government can
generate a lot of resources from to include tourism, agriculture,
manufacturing, power, services, tourism, entertainment, information and
communications, mining and solid minerals.
The president of the association, Mr. Foluso Fasoto, made this call
while addressing the media in Lagos on Tuesday. This, he stated would
help to address the nation's dwindling economic fortune occasioned by
falling crude oil price as well as create jobs for the teaming youths
and job seekers.
According to the APBN boss, the country has continued to be hindered by
years of sub-optimal administration management and would require need
stringent economic reforms to reposition her towards achieving its full
economic potentials.
An economy that is almost solely dependent on oil will lead to various
economy distortions and trouble, he added. Fasoto said the association
was formed to encourage the formation of national professional bodies in
the Nigeria, promote and enhance the status of professional bodies in
Nigeria, offer advice and render such other assistance to government as
and when necessary and make or support representation to government and
other appropriate bodies on matters affecting member Associations or
public interest.
In addition, the APBN seeks to encourage the interchange of ideas on
subjects of common interest and for this purpose to collect and publish
literature which may result in promotion of such interest, encourage
good relations and understanding among member associations and the
public, develop and maintain cooperation with other similar professional
bodies in other countries, organise national and international
conferences in Nigeria, encourage the establishment of and/or provide
professional library, among others.
In her welcome address during the board meeting of the association
earlier, the President/Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of
Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), MRS. ’Debola Osibogun, noted that considering
the richly endowed nature of Nigeria, human and material, as well as
the complexities of her struggles to attain sustainable economic
development holistically, “we can say that, only an integrated and
strategic approach, devoid of quackery, mediocrity, ethnic and religious
bigotry, corruption and several other under-development vices, can make
our country, Nigeria, great.”
