El-Rufa’i: Zaria prison rehabilitation to cost N24m

Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State said on Saturday that the state government would rehabilitate the Zaria Prison at a cost of N24 million.
He stated this in Zaria during an inspection visit to the prison.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that some aggrieved inmates of the prison, on May 28, set part of the prison ablaze during a riot, while two inmates escaped.

El-Rufa’i said the amount would be used to rehabilitate the affected areas, and advised the Nigeria Prisons Service to contact the Kaduna State Ministry of Works, on how to go about the project.
The governor promised to pay similar visit to other prisons across the state as well as state ministries.
Responding, the Comptroller of Prisons in Kaduna State, Alhaji Abubakar Garba, appreciated the governor for what he described as humanitarian intervention.
He observed that the renovation, if completed, would give the entire prison a new look, apart from improving its level of security.
