Sanusi Announces Beginning Of Ramadan As Muslims All Over The World Commence Fasting

The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia asked Muslims to keep an eye out for the slight moon, also known as Hilal, on Tuesday and inform authorities if they sighted it. If the moon was sighted on Tuesday, the month of Ramadan would have begun on Wednesday, else Ramadan will begin on Thursday. 

 

On Wednesday night the Emir of Kano, and former Central Bank Governor of Nigeria, Muhammadu Sunusi II, announced the beginning of the month of Ramadan in Doguwa Local Government Area (LGA) of the State. In accordance with a declaration from the Saudi Arabian government, Muslims all over the world will begin fasting on Thursday.

The month consists of 30 days of fasting from sunrise to sundown supplemented by a focus on strengthening faith through the recitation of the Quran and charitable giving.

According to the Ramadan timetable of the Directorate of Religious Affairs, Muslims living in Reykjavik, Iceland, will fast for 22 hours and 34 minutes on the first day of Ramadan, the longest fasting duration in the world. In Ushuaia, Argentina, on the other hand, Muslims have the shortest fasting period of eight hours and 57 minutes.
