‘Sanctioning Saraki Will Cause Implosion In APC’
He further warned that if any action is taken against the Senate President, , lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly loyal to him and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, who rebelled against the position of the party to impose its preferred candidates for the leadership of the National Assembly may decamp to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ojo, who spoke to newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, advised the APC to move fast to reconcile its legislators in the National Assembly and remind them of the need to respect and be loyal to the party which gave them the platform through which they earned their mandates to represent their people and serve Nigeria.
He said, “Any attempt by the APC to sanction Senator Saraki and Dogara, will further deepen the division that currently exit among its members in the National Assembly. Should the APC go ahead with the decision of some of its leaders to sanction both men, then, an explosion in the APC is imminent.”
The security expect stated that the legislators who rebelled against the move by the leadership of the party to impose its preferred candidates on the lawmakers also have supporters amongst the leadership of the party who may also be dismayed by attempt to shut out opposing views from other leaders and members of the party.
Ojo said, “What transpired on the floor of the National Assembly is a rebellion against party domination. It is remarkable revolution against the imposition of candidates by powerful individuals against the overall interest of the greatest majority. The emergence of Saraki and Dogara as president of Senate and Speaker of the 8th National Assembly signals the new dawn of legislative democracy in Nigeria and it is a worthwhile lesson for political parties in Nigeria.
“The APC which benefited copiously from the mistake of the PDP, which in the past 16 years revelled in unbridled arrogance, party indiscipline, imposition of candidates demonstrated by utter disregard to internal party democracy is doing the same thing that turned the electorate away from the PDP.
“I am shocked by the turn of events. The APC should leave Saraki, Dogara and their supporters in the National Assembly alone. The APC can still redeem itself by reconciling all aggrieved groups in the party and within the National Assembly. After its victorious outing in the last general elections, the APC should settle down to offer Nigerians an effective and all inclusive government rather than bickering over who occupies leadership positions in the National Assembly.”
