The watch worn by the President’s Wife, Aisha Buhari, during the
inauguration ceremony at the Eagle Square, Abuja, on Friday May 29 has
been identified as a Cartier Baignoire Folle 18- Carat White Gold
Diamond.
Price tag: 34,500 British Pound Sterling. Approximately N10,453,000 at today’s Central Bank of Nigeria’s exchange rate.
This is raising eyebrows among the Nigerian public, provoking
concerns that the apparent show of affluence runs contrary to the
spartan lifestyle that is associated with President Buhari, who is
expected to lead by example. It will be recalled that the President
campaigned and was elected on the wave of pro-masses sentiment. He won
on a mandate to fight corruption in Nigeria, which he affirmed in his
inauguration address.
Many Nigerians look up to the new President to fight corruption, cut government waste and run a lean government.
Meanwhile, there is a suggestion that the watch spotted on the wrist
of Mrs. Buhari at the inauguration event may be a clone and genuine
imitation of the Cartier Baignoire which retails at $129 only.
