Dogara Kicks as APC Makes Last Ditch Effort to Unite Legislators- Speakership
Yakubu Dogara
It appears that efforts by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to pacify its aggrieved members in the House of Representatives may have failed a few hours to the election of a new Speaker.
The legislators loyal to Hon Yakubu Dogara (APC, Bauchi), under the aegis of 8th Assembly Consolidation Group insisted that they will test the popularity of their candidate against that of the party, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila (APC Lagos).
But as at the time of filing this report, APC had summoned all its members of the Senate and the House to a last-minute meeting at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, where the choices of Gbajabiamila and Senator Ahmed Lawan were sealed last week.
Gbajabiamila's emergence as the sole candidate of the party irked the Dogara group, thus the decision to flex muscle with him against the party’s nod.
According to a statement by Hon Abdulmumini Jibrin (APC, Kano), the group has resolved to vote for Dogara this Tuesday despite the appeal made to them by the party for them to close ranks.
The statement reads "As we brace up for Tuesday’s inauguration of the 8th session of the National Assembly, we wish to state here that we are going ahead to nominate Rt. Hon Yakubu Dogara for election into the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
