Ex-lawmaker decries poor number of women in politics

A former member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Mary Enwoagulu, has lamented the declining number of women in elective positions in the country.

Enwoagulu made the remark on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Nassarawa-Eggon.

NAN reports that Enwoagulu, who represented Nassarawa-Eggon East at the assembly from 2007-2011, was the Minority Leader then.

She was also the candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Akwanga, Wamba and Nasarawa-Eggon Federal Constituency in the March 28 general elections.

“The practice of relegating women to the background when it comes to politics in Nigeria must be checked in order to save the situation from deteriorating.

“If the trend is not properly checked and given urgent attention, women would have a situation where they would not have a voice to speak on issues affecting them in the society,” she said.

The former legislator said such issues as tackling domestic violence against women, priority to girl-child education, need to consider more women for political appointments, could only be championed by women.
