Workers' Strike Cripples C’River Government Activities
Gov Liyel Imoke
Activities of the Cross River State Government have been crippled
following an indefinite strike embarked by its employees who are members
of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress
(TUC).
The workers commence the strike Tuesday following an ultimatum the NLC /TUC issued to the state government last week.
Aside from sealing the entrance of the old and new state government
secretariats, other offices manned by the members of the two unions were
completely deserted as the workers stayed at home.
Public primary and secondary schools also closed their gates to the students and teachers who thronged there.
The transport sector did not escape the effect of the strike as members
of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) also joined the
industrial action, resulting in astronomical increase in transport fare
which had already become worse due to scarcity of petroleum products.
In a bulletin jointly signed by the State’s Chairman of Nigeria Labour
Congress (NLC), Comrade John Ushie and his Trade Union Congress (TUC)
counterpart, Clarkson Otu, the workers demanded that the state
government should address their grievances without further delay.
