Educationist condemns failure rate in Ogun schools
The
National President, Ijebu-Ode Muslim College Old Students Association,
Alhaji Korede Lawal, has condemned the poor academic performance among
public secondary school pupils in Ogun State, in which he said less than
20 per cent gain admission into higher institutions each year.
He expressed this during the celebration of IMCOSA Day held within the school premises recently.
Lawal noted that there was the need for the government to look into some of its educational policies and correct this anomaly.
He said, “We have observed with concern the poor academic performance in most of our schools.
“A situation whereby less than 20 per
cent of graduands of these schools only have results that qualify them
to gain admission to higher institutions is unacceptable.
“We therefore wish to appeal to the state
government to look seriously into some of its policies in respect of
common entrance, examination, promotion criteria, and infrastructural
facilities.”
Korede also suggested that the government
must continue to have interface with Parent Teacher Association and the
Old Students’ Associations in seeking ways out of this crisis.
He said IMCOSA would continue to
complement the efforts of the government concerning the provision of
infrastructural facilities.
The principal of the senior school,
Ijebu-Ode Muslim College, Mrs. Funmi Kareem, commended the old students
for their support for their alma mater.
She, however, appealed to them to come to
the aid of the school in constructing the staff quarters, provision of
more books for the library and re-roofing of the science laboratory,
among others.
At the well attended event by the
different sets of the old students, they made donations of sets of
furniture for the pupils’ use, and air conditioners, television sets and
refrigerators, among others for the teaching staff use.
