NASS Crisis Over as Saraki, Dogara, Opponents Agree to Work Together

The lingering crisis rocking the National Assembly following the rancorous emergence of the new leadership of the legislative body was on Saturday laid to rest when all the combatants agreed to work together.

The truce was reached during a peace meeting brokered by the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

Although the details of the peace arrangement were not made known to journalists, the Governor of Imo state and chairman of the APC Governors Forum, Chief Rochas Okorocha, said the party will make further disclosures on the terms of the peace agreement next week.

"We are aware that the nation has been waiting patiently for the outcome of this our peace move,” he said. “I am happy to announce to all of you that peace at the National Assembly is in sight. We have had discussions and we have all agreed to accept peace. So, you will not see any more disagreements as in the past. Peace has returned to our party.

"Both the Senate President, the Speaker, Sanator Ahmed Lawan and Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila will work together for the unity of the National Assembly and the progress of our party. By next week we will give you the details of this our peace arrangement but so far, so good."

Okorocha, who emerged from the governors’ peace meeting at the Imo Governor’s Lodge accompanied by Saraki, Dogara, Lawan, Gbajabiamila and Aminu Tambuwal, all beaming, told anxious journalists that the feuding lawmakers have accepted to lay the dispute to rest and to embrace each other in order to ensure that the APC administration succeeds.

We gathered from reliable sources that the peace meeting may have agreed to provide some sort of soft- landing positions for Lawan and Gbajabiamila. The peace deal may have settled for compensatory positions in the form of committee appointments in the case of the Senate while in that of the House of Representatives, Gbajabiamila may be considered to take over the post of House leader which has not been taken up.
