BAUCHI State government, on Tuesday, gave banks operating in the state a 24-hour ultimatum to ensure their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) dispense case to ease the sufferings of the people of the state were currently facing as result of poor ATM services.
This was even as the government expressed disappointment over poor services by the banks, lamenting the inability of the banks to make money available at ATMs.
The ultimatum, according to a press release made available to journalists in Bauchi, signed by Rabi’u Bello for Permanent Secretary, Deputy Governor’s Office, was handed to the banks by the state deputy governor, Nuhu Gidado, at an interactive session with the state chapter of Bankers’ Forum, at the Government House, Bauchi.

Gidado lamented that a situation, where a customer had to try three different ATMs without getting N20,000, describing it as far from being satisfactory.
The deputy governor, according to the release, described the present administration in the state as being different from the last government in terms of efficiency in service delivery, saying that the Mohammed Abubakar-led administration expected a positive change capable of reducing the hardship being encountered by the people of the state in having access to their money from the banks.
He challenged the banks over their reluctance to engage in corporate social responsibility services in the state, pointing out that the last time Bauchi State enjoyed that was when a bank built a two-classroom block.
Contributing at the session, the state Head of Service, Mr Abdon Dalla Gin, stated that gathering of many people at ATM points was a security risk, “especially in this period of insurgency.”
He, therefore, expressed hope that the banks would seriously address the problem of non-functioning ATMs.
According to the release, the Head of Service also cautioned banks against indiscriminate issuance of loans to civil servants which would in the longrun leave them with little to take home, pointing out that this was against the existing financial regulation.
In his response, the chairman of the Bankers’ Forum in the state, Mohammed Musa Ladan, assured that within the next 24 hours, there would be improvement in the banks’ service delivery.
According to him, within the period, all ATMs in the state would be able to dispense cash to customers.
He urged bank customers in the state to feel free to approach the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in order to lodge any complaint with regards to service delivery.
Ladan, however, encouraged banks operating in the state to enhance their corporate social responsibility projects, saying they would be judged at the end of the year based in their CSRs and prizes would be distributed to winning banks.
