NEMA Confirms 44 dead, 48 Injured In Twin Explosions- Jos Bombing

 

The Director in charge of the North-Central zone of the National Emergency Management Agency, Mohammed Abdulsalam, has put the number of deaths in Sunday night’s bomb attacks on Jos at 44.

Mr. Abdulsalam also told journalists via telephone on Monday morning that 48 others were badly injured, and are currently hospitalized in various hospitals in the Plateau state capital.
But the Plateau state government insisted that only 18 people died in the incidents, with 18 others injured.

The statement also urged security agents to intensify checks and patrol across the state to avert reoccurrence.

Sanusi Urges Muslims To Be In Tune With Modernity

The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Saturday urged Muslims in the North to adopt new approaches to address the social, economic and political challenges facing them.
Sanusi gave the advice in Kaduna at the 10th Annual Ramadan Lecture organised by VON, FRCN and NTA, with the theme: The Challenges of Muslim Ummah in the 21st Century.
He said that the region’s failure to invest in quality education and scholarship was partly responsible for its backwardness and rise of divisive groups like the Boko Haram.
The Emir observed that due to dwindling socio-economic situation in the region, majority of the people, particularly the youths have been left “without any hope in life”, and therefore, easy recruits into insurgency.

Queues resurface in Kwara filling stations

Fuel crisis has hit Kwara State again, especially Ilorin metropolis.

Our correspondent, who monitored the development in Ilorin on Saturday, observed that many petrol stations  were closed on account of scarcity of the Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol.

There were long queues in few petrol stations that were dispensing. Most of the motorists and other buyers who were lucky to buy some litres of petrol complained bitterly of the scarcity and the increase in the price.

According to them, a litre of petrol is now sold for N100 or more in the few filling stations that have the product.

Our correspondent gathered that the fuel scarcity is worse in the hinterland. It was also learnt that petrol now sells for about N120 per litre or more in few stations that still have it.

A former Kano state governor, Alhaji Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso has denied that he was placed under a house arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, Kwankwaso, who now represents Kano Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, said contrary to reports that he had instituted an action against the EFCC in order to prevent arrest, it was some of his supporters in Kano who, on their own, sued a group for a libel.

The lingering crisis rocking the National Assembly following the rancorous emergence of the new leadership of the legislative body was on Saturday laid to rest when all the combatants agreed to work together.

The truce was reached during a peace meeting brokered by the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

Although the details of the peace arrangement were not made known to journalists, the Governor of Imo state and chairman of the APC Governors Forum, Chief Rochas Okorocha, said the party will make further disclosures on the terms of the peace agreement next week.

LABOUR movement in Osun state yesterday rejected half salaries for the month of March approved for primary school teachers and workers in the 30 local councils of the state, including the Area Office at Modakeke-Ife, by the state government.
The workers at a press briefing by the leadership of all unions in the state held at the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) unanimously turned down the payment of half salary, insisting they would accept nothing short of five months’ outstanding salaries from the state government.
Governor Rauf Aregbesola had on Thursday approved payment of 50 per cent for March salaries of the workers but the workers rejected the salary on an excuse that the money cannot solve their problems.

Worried by the pathetic circumstance that led to the death of 38-year-old Jamilu Abdullahi while in the custody of the Sokoto State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Governor Aminu Tambuwal has ordered the state’s human rights agency to investigate the matter.

Tambuwal, in a statement by his spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, vowed to get to the root of the matter to avoid a repeat of such incidence.

While insisting that his administration would continue to respect the sanctity of human lives, Tambuwal added that he values the lives of all human beings.

The statement read in part, “The administration of Governor Tambuwal values human lives and will continue to respect the sanctity of the lives of all its citizens.”
