Fire destroys timber market in Benin

An early morning fire outbreak has destroyed parts of the `Pipeline Timber Market’ in Benin, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
An eyewitness, Mr. Precious Emmanuel, told NAN in Benin that the fire started at about 3 a.m., adding that the prompt response of the fire service helped to save some parts of the market.
“We woke up to see that the market was on fire. We believe that the fire was caused by those boys who smoke Indian hemp in the market.

Suspected gunmen attacked two settlements in Udeni Ruwa District, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nararawa state, on Sunday night, killing 12 people.
Five of the victims drowned while trying to escape to the hinterland.
A witness, John Ogah, in a telephone interview with Newsman on Monday, claimed the attackers were herdsmen who invaded Okpaya, a riverine village. That could not be independently verified by this newspaper.

Saudi Arabia yesterday said it had broken off diplomatic ties with Iran, amid a row over the Saudi execution of a prominent Shiite Muslim cleric.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir spoke after demonstrators stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran on Saturday, reported the BBC.
Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and 46 others were executed on Saturday after Saudi Arabia found them guilty of “terrorism”.

Ambode signs N662.588bn 2016 Budget to Law

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode Monday signed the N662.588bn year 2016 Appropriation Law with a promise that the budget would be faithfully implemented in line with the determination of his administration to make Lagos work for all irrespective of age, gender, tribe or status.
The Appropriation Bill, presented to the Lagos State House of Assembly by Governor Ambode on December 17, was unanimously passed into law by members of the House on December 31, 2015.
Speaking at the ceremony held at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ambode said the 2016 budget was the article of faith of his administration with Lagosians and it was in line with delivering on the promises made to the people.

Kaduna youths block roads, protest 10-month power outage

Youths of Kamanzo Community in Kaduna metropolis have embacked on protest over alleged 10 months of power outage in the area.
The protest which erupted on Monday, saw the youths barricade the Ibrahim Yakowa Road, causing gridlock for over two hours.
The District Head of Kamanzo Community, Malam Dan-Makama, who confirmed the development, said that he had personally written to KEDCO on the matter, but the effort had yielded no result.
However, he appealed to the protesting youths to return to their homes, to prevent the situation from becoming violent.

Play by rules : Police to Bayelsa politicians

The police on Monday warned politicians and political parties in Bayelsa State to obey the rules guiding the electoral process before, during and after the December 5 governorship poll in the state.
The state police Commissioner, Mr. Nasiru Oki, said all the parties to the election are aware of the rules of engagement and must strive to operate within the ambit of the law.
He said on the day of the election, people are expected to go to their polling units, cast their votes quietly and return to their homes.
He said nobody would be allowed to carry dangerous instruments such as guns, knives and cudgels to voting centres.

Obuah, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday by his media aide, Jerry Needam, said Amaechi’s confirmation despite allegation of fraud, as contained in the Justice George Omereji led – Judicial Commis­sion of Inquiry and the govern­ment White Paper, which in­dicted him, was shocking.
